Our hinterland geography should shake off and regain consciousness to get into a recovery process and to promise an Islamic and humanitarian future. So, what does this mean? Why do we need such a thing? Is that a utopia or a goal that has a real equivalent? If this can happen and is a necessary thing, how can we do it? We will try to analyze these and other questions in this paper through Balkans.

For centuries Muslims and Islam ruled the Balkan towns with all its dimensions by Ottoman Empire, maintained its existence and left its stamp. We can see the deep traces of this coherence that Ottoman Empire had realized from Serbia to Montenegro, from Bosnia and Herzegovina to Bulgaria and Romania, from Greece to Macedonia, from Croatia to Slovenia and Albania.

Of course, to target the same that happened in the past may not be necessary to reach the goal. New methods and new studies can be revealed based on the current conditions and the environment. In fact sometimes to emulate to the past extremely might bring to a standstill the studies.

In winter time the yellow and faded plants and trees do not wither. They wait for the spring and summer to prove themselves, to reveal, and to show that they can stand tall and maintain their productivity. When it is time, they offer their glorious resurrection and their products to the environment where they live and to the world.

Balkan geography shows that it carries the good news of such qualified rise and ideal. However, this potential it carries is not in the condition that it will perform the expected easily. It needs other strong contributions and supports. But our sensitive brothers who are public-spirited, adopted great ideals of our mission that we earned from history, our friends who have Islamic sensitivity and perspective increase their burden and undertake the weigh of the big brother role that they provided for themselves by envisioning a design that they are in the center, giving continuously and not needing any help.

This case after a while becomes very difficult to carry and leads to dispersion and despair when the expected can not be performed. At the same time these voluntary studies leads to question marks that will bring working together to a standstill by evil-minded people by showing them negative and making possessive comments. Moreover, it attracts the rage of the countries and societies who have the potential to act hostile.

In the middle and the beginning of the last century, the impact of international imperialism in all of the political, cultural, economical and social areas and hegemonic system that established through international institutions particularly in Balkans and the nation states that were substituted and societies which eliminated our togetherness, has achieved what it wanted. On the other hand, established nation states couldn’t attain a coherent and harmonious structure and couldn’t provide peace. In all the Balkan states disintegration and conflict continues.

Today what ordinary people are searching for is to attain the peace of a century ago. Even if they can not reach the before it, they prefer attaining the conditions of 25 years ago and they emulate that synergy. However they don’t know how to make it happen. Disagreement does not arise from the roots as thought, it arises from political and social problems created by nowadays. In my opinion to realize the expected and to ensure the solution of the problems does not depend on a major discovery finally noticed after centuries. There are political, religious, economical, cultural and social, and peoples dimensions of the subject. The steps can be taken to realize what is needed is due to good reading of realities. Works to be done should not be like a construction work in an empty land. We need a partner approach that merges instead of conversion, we should accept what is available (we might like it, or not, there might be right sides or wrong sides).

I can state that “Evlad-I Fatihan Kardeşlik Köprüsü” project that we brought out under the leadership of Yurtdışı Türkler ve Akraba Toplulukları (Foreign Turks and Related Communities) and Konya Sivil Toplum Kuruluşları (Konya Non-Governmental Organizations) and the participation of the non-governmental organization representatives from all of the Balkan countries was an important and useful work.

I hope to share the benefits of these studies in the next article…
